Govt hopes allies will help clear Lokpal bill in RS as debate begins

New Delhi: The looming uncertainty over the fate of Lokpal bill Rajya Sabha on Thursday, the government hopes that all allies will come around and help to go to the option of calling a parliament is not up yet. Narayansamy said Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has spoken to leaders of Trinamool Congress, who have announced changes in key legislation, and has described the situation to them.

Trinamool Congress, which has 6 members in the Upper House 243 men in the Assembly and its allies have a majority, would remove a provision to set up Lokayuktas in the state contained in the bill passed Lok Sabha.

Narayanasamy said that it was made clear that the Lokayukta factor will not take effect without the approval of the state, adding: "I think they will all come around."

Asked whether the need for Parliament for the passage of Lokpal Bill would arise if it failed in the Rajya Sabha, he said: "I do not visualize the situation."

Asked whether the reference to the Lokayukta in the bill could be removed as required by the Trinamool, he stressed the bill has been prepared after discussions with all parties and also allies in the light of commitments given to the Prime Minister on the floor of the House version of the Lokpal and Lokayukta.

Asked whether the parties like SP and BSP would stay away, as happened in the Lok Sabha, the minister said he was not aware of the policies of these parties but the government would like to support any party.

Against the background of the problems occurred by Congress in Lok Sabha in the absence of a dozen odd members, he said the scenario is unlikely to be repeated in the Rajya Sabha that efforts are made to exist at all.

"One or two preferences are posed," he said, adding that efforts were made to ensure the presence of all.
